2013 U.S. Open Preview

2013 US Open Golf TournamentThe 2013 U.S. Open golf tournament will be played this year at the Merion Golf Club in Haverford Township, near Ardmore Pennsylvania.

Measuring at 6996 yards, the 2013 U.S. Open will be the shortest golf course for a major championship in eight years. Although the U.S. Open is usually known for being tough to play, given that the location changes each year, this U.S. Open could be a birdie bonanza given the shorter trip to the greens.

2013 U.S. Open Favorites List

Picking favorites to win the 2013 U.S. Open can be difficult due to the change of venue each year and the usual attempt to make the course tough on golfers. Although one fantasy golf strategy is to look at past results and focus on the course, the U.S. Open hasn’t been played at Merion since 1981.

Nevertheless, here are some favorites to win the 2013 U.S. Open golf tournament.

Tiger WoodsTiger Woods – He’s on the hunt for golf majors, he’s the #1 golfer in the world, he has 4 wins in 2013…oh, and he’s Tiger Woods! These are enough reasons why he should be considered a favorite to win the 2013 U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroyRory McIlroy - Already a U.S. Open winner, Rory continues to claw his way back to the top of the golf world. New equipment and maybe a lack of focus (a hot girlfriend will do that to you) has dragged Rory’s game down, but he has shown some signs recently of being the golfer that was heralded as being the next great golfer on the PGA Tour.

Webb SimpsonWebb Simpson – The last back to back U.S. Open winner was Curtis Strange in 1988-89...so Webb Simpson is in tough already. Simpson is one of the few PGA Tour players to have played the Merion (2005 U.S. Amateur) and has gone on record saying “it is my favorite golf course in the world". Given his solid play in 2013, Simpson gets to be on our 2013 US Open favorites list.

Ernie ElsErnie Els – Els is one of those guys that seems to pop up again and again in majors. He came back from the dead and won the Open Championship last year and has had two top 10 finishes at the U.S. Open (2012 and 2010). Els is not a big hitter so a short course should benefit him making him a top contender.

Graeme McDowellGraeme McDowell – Another past U.S. Open Champion (2010), McDowell has had an inconsistent 2013 with a win and five top 10 finishes, but he missed the cut at the Masters and the Players Championship - not good. Look for McDowell to quietly be a contender come Sunday.

Brandt SnedekerBrandt Snedeker – Snedeker was, at one point this year, considered one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour until an injury slowed his season. Snedeker was co-leader heading into the final round of the 2013 Masters before faltering. He should regroup and put up some decent scores this week.

Matt KucharMatt Kuchar – Kuchar has played well in the last few years and seems destined to win a major soon. Will he win the 2013 U.S. Open? He certainly has the golf game to make it happen. Count him in as one of the favorites.
